An Empire of books: Nawal Kishore Kothi || Metaphor Landmarks
In the heart of Lucknow, where the whispers of history echo through the bustling streets and the aroma of timeless cuisine lingers in the air, stands a house that has witnessed the passage of centuries. Nestled in Hazratganj, this house was the residence of the enigmatic Munshi Nawal Kishore, a legendary publisher and a pioneering force in the world of Indian printing and publishing.
Born in the mid-19th century, he founded the Nawal Kishore Press in 1858, a publishing house that became a beacon of knowledge, culture, and literature. His contributions to the preservation and dissemination of classical texts in various languages were unparalleled, and his influence extended far beyond the confines of Lucknow, reaching scholars and intellectuals across the subcontinent and beyond.
Famously, he was so busy that he could not take out the time to print Mirza Ghalib's works, Munshi Premchand was an editor at his firm. During his lifetime the press became the biggest privately owned one in Asia and the second biggest in the world after the Alpine Press in France.
In this special episode, we are granted a rare glimpse into this historical treasure, guided by Kunwar Lav Bhargav, the great-great-grandson of Munshi Nawal Kishore. With a deep sense of pride and reverence, Lav Bhargav takes us through the corridors of his ancestral home, sharing anecdotes and untold stories that have been passed down through generations. His narration brings to life the rich tapestry of his great-grandfather's achievements and the indelible mark he left on the literary world.
Kunwar Lav Bhargava serves as the Chairman of the India International Youth Film Festival and as Chief Trustee of the Meher Bhargava Foundation. He has held significant positions in the Samajwadi Party and the Congress, including being the State General Secretary of SP and an AICC member.
His commitment extends to workers' rights, which is evident through his patronage of the Uttar Pradesh Bijli Mazdoor Sanghatan. Mr. Bhargava's extensive roles include being an ex-officio member of the U.P. State Film Development Corporation and former President of the U.P. Film Chamber of Commerce. Additionally, he has contributed significantly as an executive member of Anjuman-e-Awadh and as a former member of the Indian Council for Cultural Relations.
Through diverse roles and engagements, Bhargava continues to make a tangible impact on both social and political spheres.

Very Enlightening….thanks to this press our family shijra /tree was lost …was searched everywhere, even in England and Pakistan due to family migrations but even after all efforts it was found in Naval Kishor press in some court records there …thanks to Mr . Bhargav for the wonderful explanation
